12th Anniversary of Marco Antonio Firebaugh's Passing

Today, on the first day of Spring, marks twelve years since the lamented passing of Marco Antonio Firebaugh at the age of 39, and he is being timely remembered by the California-Mexico Studies Center for his landmark Assembly Bill 540 legislation, and numerous accomplishments during his trailblazing career.
While Marco Antonio Firebaugh's legacy reflects a wide range of undertakings, foremost was his dedication to serving the most vulnerable and the underrepresented, and above all, he stood up for immigrants and working families.
Marco was born on October 13, 1966 in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, migrated to the U.S. as a young boy and never forgot his humble beginnings. After being diagnosed with liver disease in 2003, he died on March 21, 2006 from severe complications. He was survived by his two children, Tlalli Ariana and Nicolas Andres Firebaugh.
Though he died at a young age, his legacy lives on today in particular through his AB-540 bill, signed into law on Oct 12, 2001 by Governor Gray Davis, allowing undocumented students in California to pay in-state tuition, at public colleges and universities rather than the out-of-state rate for non-residents. A historic breakthrough precedent in U.S. higher education, now replicated by several states that benefit the growing student population now often referred to as Dreamers.
We invite you to mark his passing with a moment of silence and prayer, to reflect upon his legacy, after you watch the following documentary produced by the CMSC to keep his memory alive!

If you missed the Dreamers' play- 'Dreamers: Aquí y Allá', you can view the recording here.
We need your help more than ever before in order to continue to fight for Dreamers and Advance Parole!

As you may know, the Supreme Court has recently denied President Trump's request for rescinding DACA.  However, the appeals court will rule in the near future, but for now DACA is still in place as before September 5, 2017,  but without Advance Parole, except for "deserving cases" as in the case of CMSC Dreamer Mayra Garibo.

Thus, we are asking for your support as a beneficiary or supporter of our program, and because without it, we will not be able to continue to advocate for Dreamers' legalization, a path to citizenship and for our next projects: the California-Mexico Dreamers book publication and full-length documentary.

The Nation is focused on students and gun violence. But kids in urban schools want to know, where's everybody been?

High school students march last month n Pittsburgh to protest gun violence and honor the victims of the deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

One of them lost a brother - his twin - to gunfire.  Another lost a boyfriend.
And a third can count four friends - four - who were killed by gunshots last year.
Of course, these kids I talked to are planning to join teens throughout the country as they walk out of class on Wednesday to  protest America's rampant gun violence.
But they're also wondering where everyone's been on this kids and guns problem all these years.
"This is happening over and over again," said Zion Kelly, 17, whose brother, Zaire Kelly, died at the hands of a robber last fall. "Dozens of students have been shot and killed - more than in Florida - and we're not getting the same attention."    Read More
